HOSPICE, 2018-2021

a creative research regarding queer notions of hospice in collaboration with rodrigo garcia alves.

How will we take care of each other as non-blood-related family? What do we require as queer people to ensure that we will be able to provide the end-of-life care that we envision? How can artistic research become a life-long commitment explored in different forms and iterations? Over a series of artists residencies between 2018- 2020, Rodrigo Alves Garcia and Liz Rosenfeld met with figures who work with death in both pragmatic and creative ways: a palliative doctor, a death doula, a choir director, a bondage expert and a tattoo healer, among others. Together they deepened the knowledge around dying and queer care, creating choreographic scores, video works and auto-discursive writing dealing with questions of intimacy, asking how queer kin can continue to hold space for each other politically, artistically, architecturally and emotionally as they prepare for their hospice. Over this period Garcia- Alves and Rosenfeld created a series of short videos, writings, images and scores. This research culminated in what has become their first duet for the stage, “Thank You For Your Effort, Even If These Requests Cannot be Fulfilled.” Video works can be shared as installed pieces, as well as in a short film screening format. Our zine is available upon request and is also available to be shared as live reading event with the artists.
